# The Real-World Project Atlas

A local research database for The Future in Print, reviewed 1 November 2026. Open `project-atlas.html` through the existing localhost server. Each title opens a shareable `project.html?id=…` reference sheet.

## Included

14 real named projects spanning Exploration (Sea, Sky, Space) and Creation (Infrastructure, Mobility, Manufacturing, Intelligence, Robotics, Energy). MOSAiC is explicitly a completed historical landmark. Energy includes SPARC and Cape Station because they represent specific fusion and enhanced-geothermal developments; generic wind and solar projects are excluded.

Search, combine World/Subject/Status filters, sort by title/status/cost/first recorded milestone, export the filtered view, or download the full dataset. Filters are preserved in the URL and in the detail page’s back link. Each reference sheet contains overview, technical facts with source references, milestones, cost scope, unresolved issues, an editorial illustration brief, and source links. Browser printing is available.

## Data files

- `projects.json`: editable canonical research snapshot with all details and sources.
- `projects-data.js`: equivalent static browser data, allowing use without a backend.
- `projects.sqlite`: portable SQLite database with projects, sources, specifications and milestones tables.
- `projects.csv`: flat export with source URLs and cost scope.

These are synchronized deliverables for this version, not a live editing/synchronization service. If editing the canonical JSON, regenerate the JS, CSV and SQLite together before publishing another version. No account, API key, cloud database or production service is used.

## Evidence rules

Use named projects and identifiable operators. Prefer agencies, laboratories, manufacturers and project authorities. Museum history supplies the Attenborough construction-cost context. Sources are linked per record, and specifications/milestones map to numbered sources. An operator statement is attributed, not treated as independent performance validation.

Never equate corporate fundraising, contract awards, unit prices and total project budgets. Unknown costs remain null, not zero. Keep original currencies; cost sorting groups by currency then compares numeric amounts within that currency, with unknown amounts last. Scopes differ even within a currency, so this is not a value-for-money ranking. Budgets are historical reported figures, not inflation-adjusted or converted values.

Timeline sorting uses the first explicitly dated milestone recorded in this dataset, which may be a contract, funding announcement, shipment or future target. It is not a project inception or completion ranking. Future events are marked Target or Developer target. Opening uncertainty is retained for Chuo and Fehmarnbelt.

The snapshot is manually reviewed, not continuously monitored or guaranteed exhaustive. Recheck sources before final print publication, especially fast-moving construction, commissioning and experimental programs. Earlier fictional artwork remains labeled as concept art; it is not evidence or a depiction of these named projects. The atlas itself uses no generated machinery diagrams as factual documentation.

## Art direction

Make reality feel extraordinary through viewpoint, scale, light and meticulous drawing. Keep named machine geometry and location truthful. Separate verified facts from proposed scenes and future artist impressions. Suggested first real-subject pairings: Webb, Polarstern/MOSAiC, ASML High-NA EUV, Fehmarnbelt construction, Digit at GXO, and SPARC.

## Editorial categories
Moments, Machines, Megaprojects, Futures and People are overlapping story lenses stored as tags. They are separate from realm, subject, artistic collection and factual status. People means a potential builder/team profile, not an existing interview or endorsement. Futures indicates a proposed future-facing treatment, not a completed capability. All 12 original records are retained; Falcon 9 recovery and Millau are additions. JSON/JS arrays, CSV tag lists and SQLite project_tags/editorial_categories tables carry the same taxonomy.
